James Baldwin: Voices of Queer Resistance is a National Portrait Gallery publication exploring the legendary writer and activist through portraiture and community. Curated by the NPG's Director of Curatorial Affairs Rhea L. Combs with Pulitzer Prize–winner Hilton Als, this book situates Baldwin among influential figures who shaped his life and legacy. Through portraits and artworks featuring Baldwin alongside Lorraine Hansberry, Bayard Rustin, Nina Simone, and others, the book examines how his sexuality, faith, artistic vision, and civil rights activism informed his enduring impact on American culture and literature.
